The Dabo Show gets renewed

Dabo Swinney has been named Clemson's head coach. Of the non-interim variety.

Not to toot my own horn, but I've been saying this was in the works from the beginning, and I'm not so sure if this is the right move. But it's certainly the safe and easy one, for now.

terrible - I repeat, TERRIBLE - move for Clemson. If they couldn't take Bowden anymore why hire an acolyte from his staff?!? This is just like when Georgia Tech hired Paul Johnson, only the exact opposite

I don't get it either. But I think the decision was made early on when they fired Tommy midseason and promoted Swinney to interim head coach instead of Vic Koenning or Brad Scott.

The track record all around isn't good in terms of hiring assistants as replacements. Especially when it's from the staff of the coach you just fired. That's why the Randy Shannon hire still doesn't sit right with me.

This move is hardly the splash hire that Clemson needed to get them over the hump and into the ACC Championship Game / BCS Bowls.

This program might be headed towards annual 7 and 8 win seasons ... Tom O'Brien style.

"Splash hires" can be overrated. To wit, I think Lane Kiffin to Tennessee has a good chance of being a disaster. Give me the smart, quiet, solid hires any day (i.e. Pete Carroll, Jeff Jagodzinski, Pat Fitzgerald, Brian Kelly).

And I know TOB bugged you guys...but NCState played the best football in the ACC this month. And the way things are looking, my $$s on BC/NCSt as the programs to beat for the next few years in the Atlantic. FSU is stuck at 8-4/5-3 at best with their current arrangement, MD is stuck at 6-6 to 7-5 with Fridge, and Grobe at Wake has probably settled at 7-5/4-4 annually as well.

Hey, I thought you said you weren't sold yet on Jeff Jagodzinski. You finally coming around?? :)

I realize that NC State is vying for an at-large bowl berth, but for TOB to come out and say they are the best team in the ACC right now ... pfft. BC has won 4 straight too, over what I think are superior opponents.

Russell Wilson is LEGIT though, and I will agree with you. NC State has a lot of upside and BC should be solid for the next few years.

Early look at 2009: BC and NC State in the Atlantic, the Techs (and maybe UNC) in the Coastal.

And yes, Kiffin to Tennessee has disaster written all over it. The only thing that might save that arrangement in Monte.

Oh, I've come full circle with Jags...skeptical, then impressed, then skeptical, then impressed again. This year had "drop-off" written all over it yet he came through in the clutch in three straight tough games at the end (@FSU,@Wake,MD). And Spaz deserves just as much credit as well.

I'd really like to see how BC does against some real non-conference competition...not against shoddy ND teams and not against Kent St/UCF/Army/etc. But that's nitpicking, for now.

I don't think you can fault BC for scheduling Notre Dame and then the Irish laying eggs the last 6 tries.

But I agree the scheduling needs to improve. DeFilippo seems pretty set on the 1 BCS conference opponent (Notre Dame, then Syracuse, then Northwestern, then Southern Cal), 1 MAC, 1 other FBS non-BCS and 1 I-AA scheduling.

BC also seems to be unfortunate in its scheduling, as we seem to catch teams when they are going through a down period (see: Penn State 2003-2004, BYU 2005-2006, Stanford 2001-2002).

And everyone knocks the bowl winning streak, but there are wins over Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan State and Boise State (on the blue turf) in that streak.

He has impressed me but yet I don't know how smart it is to go with your interim coach who is riding a wave of emotion.

Nice Arrested Development quote.

I'm glad someone caught that reference. AD was one of the "great" shows.
